danceoke // transeoke
Danceoke is kind of like karaoke, but instead of singing we dance, all together, watching music videos and trying – sometimes hopelessly – to follow the moves on the screen. For some of us, dancing publicly in clubs or other dance parties can be very difficult, especially if you feel awkward about your body, about the way you move in the world and present yourself. It's not just about cis hetero patriarchal mainstream clubs, as even in DIY queer feminist parties it can be hard to just let go and dance your heart out because of normative expectations. In danceoke, we don't stare at others, we stare at the screen. Danceoke is about reclaiming the dance floor, it's about bodily empowerment, and it's about community. Like Tami T says concerning her music video to Princess, one of the videos featured in vj Fake Fag's transeoke: "Dancing makes my body feel so foreign, dancing makes me feel so awkward, dancing makes me feel so trans. [Princess] is about the high expectations of 'performing female' as a trans woman, and I never feel these expectations more than when I am on a dancefloor. That is why I wanted to make a choreography and to dance in a video, because even if dancing feels terrible it also feels amazing. This is a celebration to awkwardness, and a celebration to the silly dances we dance in our bedrooms."
