Turun Kirjakahvila ottaa osaa kulutuskriittiseen Älä osta mitään -päivään pitämällä kassakoneensa visusti suljettuna: kaupankäynnin sijaan näytämme aamusta iltaan ilmaisia elokuvia! Kahden tunnin välein esitettäviä klassikkoja yhdistää matkanteon tematiikka ja spekulatiivinen fiktiivisyys. Omat vegaaniherkut mukaan (ja muiden kanssa jaettavaksi), Kirjis tarjoaa kaffet!

On Buy Nothing Day, the international day of protest against consumerism, the cash register at the Turku Book Café will remain tightly shut from dawn to dusk. Instead of providing you with consumable goods such as coffee and books in exchange for monetary units, we will show and watch with you some really nice movie classics every two hours throughout the day! Bring along your own vegan treats, and treat the rest of us with them, too – we shall fill your cup with warm coffee or tea for free!

Kahvilan ovien avauduttua katsotaan vuonna 1939 ensi-iltansa saanut koko perheen musikaali, joka perustuu L. Frank Baumin vuonna 1900 ilmestyneeseen lastenkirjaan. Elokuvassa Judy Garlandin esittämä orpotyttö Dorothy päätyy myrskyn lennättämänä ihmeelliseen maahan sateenkaaren tuolla puolen. Päästäkseen takaisin kotiin hänen täytyy matkata kaukaiseen Smaragdikaupunkiin kysymään neuvoa mahtavalta velholta. Matkakumppaneikseen Dorothy saa Variksenpelättimen, jolta puuttuu aivot, Peltimiehen, jolta puuttuu sydän, ja Leijonan, jolta puuttuu rohkeus. (Victor Fleming, USA 1939, 101 min.)

Seuraavaksi on vuorossa Kirjakahvilan viikottaista teinileffasarjaa sivuten scifi-, komedia- ja highschool-genret yhdistävä kasaritrilogia, jossa seurataan Michael J. Foxin esittämän lukiolaisen Marty McFlyn seikkailuja ajassa. Tarina alkaa Martyn eksentrisen tiedemiesystävän Emmett "Doc" Brownin lähettäessä tämän rakentamallaan aikakoneella vahingossa menneisyyteen, vuoteen 1955. Ongelmat alkavat kasaantua Martyn tulevan mutta 1950-luvulla vielä itsekin teini-ikäisen äidin ihastuessa tulevaan poikaansa tämän tulevan isän sijaan. Klassikkotrilogian toinen osa keskittyy tulevaisuuteen, vuoteen 2015, ja elokuvasarjan päätteeksi aikamatkataan villiin länteen, vuoteen 1885. Rooleissa Michael J. Foxin ohella mm. Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson, Elizabeth Shue ja Mary Steenburgen. (Robert Zemeckis, USA 1985-1990, 337 min.)

Kirjakahvilan Älä osta mitään -päivä huipentuu näytökseen, jossa katsotaan yksi elokuvahistorian hienoimmista teoksista. Kyseessä on perfektionistisen visionäärin Stanley Kubrickin ohjaama ja Kubrickin yhdessä tieteiskirjailija Arthur C. Clarken kanssa käsikirjoittama visuaalisesti häikäisevä katselmus ihmiskunnan esihistoriaan, tulevaisuuteen ja paikkaan universumissa - ja mitä kaiken tämän tuolla puolen ikinä onkaan. Here are some queer facts (and occasional rumours) concerning the 1939 musical directed by Victor Fleming and starring Judy Garland:

1. Judy Garland is widely considered a gay icon. The Advocate has called Garland "The Elvis of homosexuals." The reasons frequently given for her standing as an icon among gay men are admiration of her ability as a performer, the way her personal struggles seemed to mirror those of gay men in America during the height of her fame, and her value as a camp figure.

2. The slang term "friend of Dorothy", which likely derives from Garland's portrayal of Dorothy Gale in the 1939 film, became a code phrase gay people used to identify each other when homosexual acts were still illegal in the United States. In the film, Dorothy immediately accepts those who are different, including the Cowardly Lion, the "gentle lion" living a lie: "I'm afraid there's no denyin', I'm just a dandy lion." The Lion identifies himself through song as a "sissy" and exhibits stereotypically "gay" (or at least effeminate) mannerisms. The Lion offers a coded example of Garland meeting and accepting a gay man without question.

3. Another connection is the rainbow flag, symbol of the LGBT communities which may have been inspired, in part, by Garland's song "Over the Rainbow," originally written for and appearing in the film. Garland's performance of this song has been described as "the sound of the closet," speaking to gay men whose image "they presented in their own public lives was often at odds with a truer sense of self that mainstream society would not condone."

4. Garland's father Frank Gumm and other significant people in her life were gay. Garland's husband Vincente Minnelli was a closeted gay or bisexual. From the beginning of her Hollywood career, Garland liked to visit gay bars with her openly gay friends, the composer Roger Edens and director George Cukor, to the chagrin of her handlers at MGM studios. Finally, even though Garland herself never claimed to be bisexual, she has been said to have had affairs with women as well as men.

5. There was great awareness and appreciation of Garland among the Stonewall Inn patrons in the late 1960s. Because the bar had no liquor license, it was passed off as a bottle club and patrons were required to sign in. Many used pseudonyms, and "Judy Garland" was among the most popular.

6. The Stonewall Inn riots, the flashpoint of the modern Gay Liberation movement, occurred just hours after Garland's funeral, and her death may have helped provoke the unrest. Garland had earlier bragged, "When I die I have visions of fags singing 'Over the Rainbow' and the flag at Fire Island [a historical gay haven in New York] being flown at half mast." Garland's daughter Lorna Luft points to the connection with pride, saying that her mother would have found the rioting appropriate.
